A teeth cleaning is essential for protecting your teeth and preventing tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. Dr. Salah or one of our dental hygienists will remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria buildup on your teeth. During the process, we may also perform preventive measures, such as fluoride toothpaste, to help you maintain clean teeth and quality dental health.
There are four different types of dental cleanings available to those looking for a healthy smile. Our dental center offers all four to people of all ages. See what type you might need and schedule an appointment today.
More commonly known as a routine or regular dental cleaning, oral prophylaxis cleaning is an annual dentist appointment to keep your mouth clean. It helps prevent cavities, tartar buildup, and gum disease. A typical cleaning can include an x-ray, flossing, and fluoride treatment, among other routine dental examination procedures.
Also known as a deep clean, a scaling and root planing procedure is typically recommended for plaque buildup at the gum line. The procedure will involve scraping your teeth with small dental tools to remove tartar below the gum line before smoothing the tooth root. This deep cleaning helps protect your teeth and gums from plaque.
Also known as a full mouth debridement (FMD) is necessary when there’s serious plaque buildup on your teeth. A gross debridement is more invasive than an oral prophylaxis cleaning, scaling, and root planing. In some cases, an anesthetic may even be used to numb areas in the mouth where the plaque buildup is the most severe.
As the name suggests, periodontal maintenance is a special treatment for periodontal diseases. Periodontal disease affects the gums, alveolar bone, or periodontal ligament, with the first stage being gingivitis. Periodontal maintenance will include regular cleaning, scaling, and root planing services, but we’ll also examine the pockets of your gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to something as serious as leukemia.
