Dental implants, also known as implant retained dentures, are artificial teeth and roots that are embedded on each side of the jaw. These implants can replace a single missing tooth, or a few missing teeth, they can also be the groundwork for a denture with many teeth. The roots of the implant eventually become fused to the jaw bone, creating a stable foundation for a denture to sit on top of. If you need dentures, but are concerned that they will move around when eating or make it difficult to speak, then dental implants may just be the right choice for you.

Dental implants can be very helpful for those with missing teeth. Along with replacing those teeth the implants don’t rely on adjacent teeth, they stand alone, this protects the natural teeth around the implant area. Unlike dentures, implants don’t usually lead to bone loss since the root is replaced. Implants look and function just like natural teeth, so you don’t have to worry about taking them out, or having any chewing or talking difficulties. Like everything there are a few downsides, first, implants are not a “quick fix” for missing teeth, they take time to properly fuse with jaw bone. They can also be costly since most insurances won’t cover them. Additionally, you may need dental work in the future, which can disrupt the implant.

If you think that dental implants might be the right choice for you, or if you’ve been referred by your dentist, you should schedule an appointment to talk about the procedure, costs and the available options.
